Best Soil for Monstera: Complete Guide to Aroid Mix
The quick answer
A chunky, well-draining aroid mix built from orchid bark, perlite, and pumice, with only a small fraction of organic matter. Regular potting soil compacts, holds water against the roots, and is the single most common reason Monsteras yellow, rot, and stall. The same mix works for deliciosa, adansonii, Thai Constellation, and mini Monstera.
The simple test: squeeze a handful of damp mix. If it forms a tight clump that holds its shape, it is wrong for a Monstera. A proper mix crumbles apart immediately and feels airy and rough, not smooth and clay-like.
What goes into the mix
Six ingredients show up in nearly every quality aroid mix, in roughly these proportions.

How to judge a bag
“Monstera soil”, “aroid mix”, “chunky mix”, and “tropical plant soil” all describe the same medium. The label matters less than the ingredients. Three things disqualify a product regardless of what’s printed on the front:
- Potting soil, peat, or compost is the primary ingredient. Small amounts are fine.
- The particles are smaller than 5mm and feel uniform, like sand or coffee grounds.
- It feels heavy and damp out of the bag. A real aroid mix feels light and rough.
Bagged “Monstera soil” from most box stores is a coin flip: it might be a real chunky blend, or regular potting soil with a nice label. DIY is worth it if you have ten or more aroids and want to dial in a blend per species. A pre-blended mix makes sense for everyone else, especially if you have already lost one plant and don’t want to roll the dice again.
Signs your Monstera is in the wrong soil
- Yellowing leaves from the bottom up. Classic root suffocation. The lowest leaves go first because they are farthest from the active roots.
- Soil still wet more than 7 days after watering. A healthy aroid mix dries within 5 to 7 days at most.
- Brown, mushy stems near the base. Stem rot from waterlogged soil. By the time this shows, the soil has been wrong for weeks.
- Stalled growth in spring. A Monstera in season should push a new leaf every 2 to 4 weeks. Nothing for two months usually means unhealthy roots.
- Roots packed only at the bottom. Healthy aroid roots spread throughout the mix. Roots concentrated low down mean the mix above is too dense.
- A musty or sour smell. Fungal or bacterial activity: the mix has broken down or stays too wet.
If two or more match, the fix is a soil change, not a watering-schedule change. Repotted into a chunky aroid mix, most plants recover within 4 to 8 weeks.
How to repot, step by step
Ten to fifteen minutes per plant once your supplies are ready.
- Water 1–2 days beforehand. Damp roots release from the pot more easily and recover faster.
- Slip the plant out gently. Squeeze a plastic pot, or run a knife around the inside of a ceramic one. Support the base of the stem. Don’t yank.
- Inspect and clean the roots. Healthy roots are firm, white or cream, and plump. Dead ones are mushy and dark. Snip those with sterilised scissors.
- Size up by 1–2 inches only. Drainage hole non-negotiable. Plastic nursery pots are fine and easier to unpot next time.
- Add fresh mix to the bottom and centre the plant so the top of the root mass sits about an inch below the rim.
- Backfill, don’t pack. Work the mix down between roots to fill air pockets, then tap the pot on the table to settle it.
- Water thoroughly once, until it runs out the drainage hole. This settles the mix and rehydrates the roots.
- Hold off fertiliser for 2–3 weeks. Freshly disturbed roots respond poorly to extra nutrients. Resume once new growth starts.

Why Monsteras need something different
Monstera deliciosa, adansonii, and most other species are aroids. In tropical Central and South American rainforests they grow as semi-epiphytes: roots wrapping around trunks, digging into bark crevices, threading through layers of decomposing leaves. The roots are constantly exposed to air, moisture flows past rather than sitting around them, and nutrients come from the slow breakdown of organic matter.
Standard bagged potting soil does the opposite. It compacts within weeks, sealing the roots into dense, oxygen-starved mud. Every watering saturates it and the water sits for days. Leaves yellow from the bottom up, the stem softens at the base, and within a couple of months the plant is in trouble. The usual reaction is to water less, but the problem is not frequency, it is the soil itself.
Five mistakes to avoid
- Rocks or gravel in the bottom of the pot. Old advice that turns out to be backwards: a gravel layer raises the water table inside the pot and traps moisture against the roots.
- “All-purpose” indoor plant soil. Formulated for plants that evolved in true soil, which Monsteras did not. The structure is wrong even when the bag says indoor plants.
- Using potting soil as DIY filler. Even 30% mixed in shifts the drainage profile enough to cause problems.
- A pot that’s too big. A 6-inch Monstera does not need a 10-inch pot. Oversized pots hold wet mix the roots can’t reach.
- Leaving a new plant in nursery soil. Most nursery Monsteras arrive in dense peat optimised for mass production, not your home. Repot within the first month.

My Monstera has aerial roots. Should they go in the soil?
Aerial roots are built to climb, not to be buried. Tuck them in if they reach down naturally, but don’t force them. They absorb moisture from the air, and a moss pole gives them something to grip.
What about a self-watering pot?
Same chunky aroid mix. The reservoir only changes how water is delivered, not what the medium needs to do. If anything, structure matters more here, since a fine mix will wick up far too much moisture.
